Simplified Nutrition Facts Format

The simplified Nutrition Facts layout has been updated in the beta version.

For Nutrition Facts labels using the Simplified format, the automated review checks whether the nutrients present in insignificant amounts meet the applicable threshold for the selected population. The review uses the appropriate nutrient list and threshold for adults and children 4 years and older, pregnant and lactating women, infants, and children 1 through 3 years. If the threshold is not met, the review identifies the nutrients counted as insignificant and recommends reviewing the format selection.

The app does not automatically change the label format or prevent the label from being saved.

For adults and children 4 years and older, and pregnant and lactating women, the simplified Nutrition Facts format may be used when 8 or more of the following nutrients are present in insignificant amounts:

Calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, total sugars, added sugars, protein, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium.

For infants and children 1–3 years, the simplified format may be used when 6 or more of the following nutrients are present in insignificant amounts:

Calories, total fat, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, total sugars, added sugars, protein, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and potassium.

When you select the Simplified format, the app checks the applicable rule for the selected population. If the minimum number of nutrients with insignificant amounts is not met, a message displays the number counted and identifies the nutrients included in the count.

The app does not automatically change the selected format. You can continue editing and save the label; the issue will also be identified by the automated label review if it remains unresolved.

The application will add an appropriate footnote depending on your selections. See 21 CFR 101.9(f) for more information about when the simplified format may be used on a food label.

For insignificant amounts, see this post.
